Hypogonadism

What Is Hypogonadism

Diagnosis And Its Treatment

Hypogonadism is the medical term for extremely low testosterone production.. it is caused when (with age usually) the general hormonal activity in the testes (and in the ovaries in women) reduces the amount of testosterone being produced.

This in turn can also effect the production of healthy sperm and other hormones that include

DHEA, activin, inhibin and progesterone.. in women ovulation can also be affected.

Diagnosing Hypogonadism

Its quite simple to diagnose, a simple blood test should normally suffice.. it is best to take these tests in the morning as it is at this time that the levels are at their highest.

Healthy testosterone levels in men are generally considered to be in the region of between 350ng/dl and 1000ng/dl at the maximum

If the test results indicate levels of below 250/ng/dl, it is likely that you are suffering with hypogonadism

Treating Hypogonadism

Treatments are usually required if the levels drop below 300ng/dl..

Occasionally treatment is required even if the test results appear to be in the normal range.. for example, a young man aged 25 could have test results somewhere towards the lower end of normal range (about 380ng/dl) but he could be experiencing some or all of the symptoms of Hypogonadism – these can include:

  • Increased body fat
  • poor sleep
  • lack of sex drive – poor erection function
  • reduced muscle tone and strength
  • low energy levels
  • poor cognitive function

If the diagnosis indicates hypogonadism the doctor will usually suggest a courseinjecting-testosterone of testosterone emplacement therapy (TRT) This generally involves the delivering of synthetic or drug based testosterone into the blood stream..

The popular methods of TRT include the use of injections, creams, gels, patches and pellets that are placed under the skin.. Oral based treatment are less likely to be used these days as there are chances that they could cause damage to the liver.

Treatment of Hypogonadism can often take up to 3 months to have full effect.

Life Expectancy When Suffering From Hypogonadism

A study carried out by the Endocrine society revealed that men aged over 50 who are suffering with Hypogonadism could have a reduced life expectancy.. they studied 800 men aged between 51 and 90 years old and over 33% of the men studies had been diagnosed with Hypogonadism.. it was discovered that these men had a 33% increased chance of death within 18 years if their Hypogonadism was left untreated.

man-taking-pillApart from prescription or drug based therapies, there is a large percentage of experts who recommend the use of natural t-boosting supplements.. these are generally less likely to cause any adverse reactions that have been associated with drug based TRT (click here to read more about the problems associated with drug based TRT)and for many men are every bit as effective.

Natural Testosterone boosters do not put actual testosterone into the body.. instead they deliver a mix of proven ingredients, mineral and vitamins that encourage the body to increase its natural production of testosterone.. the results are every bit as effective and the body is less likely to react badly to your own genetic hormone.
