Taken from the root of the glycyrrhiza glabra plant, this sweet, black food stuff contains a saponin compound known as Glycyrrhizin.

This is used to sweeten and add flavour to many foodstuffs and other products including, herbal teas, alcoholic drinks, tobacco products, candy and even some breath fresheners too. It is also found in some medications as well.

Clinical studies have shown that the Glycyrrhizin in liquorice can reduce testosterone levels by as much as 40%.

Other studies have shown that Glycyrrhizic acid ( a derivative of Glycyrrhizin) can reduce testosterone levels from an average reading of 740ng.dl to a low of 414ng.dl – Now that is getting close to low testosterone territory (hypogonadism).

A third study followed a group of men who were given 7g of liquorice to eat each day for 7 days. After that time, Their testosterone levels were checked and the scientists found that they had on average dropped dramatically by around 26%.

This is one of the hardest food groups to cut out – for most of us anyway, we all like a drink from time to time don’t we?

The fact its that the odd drink wont do us any harm, but if you reach for the bottle on a regular basis, it’s likely that your testosterone levels will take a dramatic hit.

Certain Vegetable Oils

The last foodstuff on our list are vegetable oils, particularly those with a high level of polyunsaturated fat (PUFA). Its well known that a high intake of these oils can cause certain illnesses including diabetes, high cholesterol, heart problems, bowel problems and some types of cancer.

Examples to avoid include canola, soybean and safflower oils.
